Am 25. Mai 2025 ereignete sich auf Hawaii ein spektakulärer Vulkanausbruch: Der Kīlauea, einer der aktivsten Vulkane der Welt, spie in einer sechs Stunden andauernden Eruption Lavafontänen bis zu 300 Meter hoch in den Himmel. Diese beeindruckende Naturgewalt war bereits die 23. Eruptionsphase seit Dezember 2024.

Die Eruption begann um 16:15 Uhr Ortszeit im Halemaʻumaʻu-Krater innerhalb des Hawaii-Volcanoes-Nationalparks. Innerhalb von 30 Minuten erreichten die Lavafontänen aus dem Nordschlot eine Höhe von etwa 300 Metern, nahezu vergleichbar mit dem Eiffelturm. Kurz darauf folgte der Südschlot mit Fontänen von bis zu 250 Metern Höhe. Die Lavaströme bedeckten rund die Hälfte des Kraterbodens.

Der Kīlauea ist bekannt für seine häufigen Ausbrüche. Seit Beginn der aktuellen Eruptionsserie im Dezember 2024 wurden bereits 23 Episoden verzeichnet. Die jüngste Eruption am 25. Mai war eine der intensivsten in dieser Reihe.
